Outdoor Power Equipment and Small Engines - Help,, Strange Waters

Hey Guys, I'm into a Lawnboy Snowblower. Its Model 55384, Ser 83206033 with a Peerless transmission Model 700-012 & other trans #'s 8287 & 1951. The machine has no friction drive, It's all thru this gearbox & it's leaking grease bad. The Unit works better than most New machines & the owner is trying to save it. Is there a re-seal kit available for this trans or any other suggestions?? The Lawnboy parts lookup doesn't show any seals around where the shafts exit the housing... I've never been into one of these so any hints, Tips would be Great!!!! Thanks Lots, Roger

If so I use a automotive grease seal remover on tiller axles in which a screw driver would pop the old ones out as well. I use a piece of pvc pipe the same size as the o.d. of the new seal but long enough to clear the axle to drive them back in.

No, It,s the transmission under the unit. This machine has a Gear drive instead of a friction wheel setup.. Thanks, Roger

OOOK Gotcha,

You are speaking of the 4-5 speed Peerless then, There are no seals in this gear-box. What happens is the shaft bushings wear and the Bentonite grease liquidfies and starts leaking through the bushings.

The fix is check/replace worn bushings clean all the old grease out and put new grease in, It's Tecumseh part # 788067C.

If you have never been into one of these units I can give a few pointers if you like.

Thanks, 31ytech, It is the Peerless 5 speed. Never had one apart. A lot of grease has leaked from it by the looks of the mess!! Any advice would be helpfull. I've had transport truck & car & truck transmissions apart, But I'm sure there are little hints to everything & I really don't want to break anything. Many thanks, Roger

My opinion (and it is a knowledgeable one mind you) is that this is a very simple trans to service. It does help to have a service manual or, at least, a breakdown for reference purposes.
