Hello,

I have a new shower install that I put Durock in all the surrounding walls. At both sides of the opening it butts up against drywall. Long story short, both my mud-guy and painter decided to be a little too generous on the seams and now I have a good foot of painted Durock.

My question is: Can I just slap the thin set right on top of the painted Durock section? My tiles are 8x12" porcelain and I will be stacking them horizontally in a brick pattern. I'm worried about how well the tile will bond to the wall.

Scraping off the paint/mud is going to be very time consuming and would like to avoid this if at all possible.

Any ideas if this is OK?

I would coarse sand the Durock in an effort to get 80% of it re-exposed.:) The thinset should really have the raw cement board to bond to in this case.:)
