I need some help.

I have a 2002 sears DYT4000 w/ briggs & straton 21 OHV Intek twin, 40777-0121E4 engine.

Recently i was mowing and something broke inside and knocked a hole in the motor.

I spoke to sears about replacing the motor and the estimate was like 2,400, can i purchase this motor from someone other than sears? What information is needed from the motor to insure I order the correct model.

Any help will be much appreciated.

40777-0121E4 , these numbers are all you need but you appear to missing a digit in the --40777-- which is the model#,

You can try these guys, prices are very competitive.

I took a guess that you left a seven off the number you posted so I added one and this is what I found;

Those numbers on my dealer's only site show the proper replacement engine is model #407777 type #0027, Your engine is no longer built and the direct replacement is not either.

I found this one you may want to check into;

Or you can contact this place with your numbers and see if they have anything for a replacement;

You should have either a 405777 or a 407777 with a 0121 type number. In either case a shortblock is available for $1021.65 plus backfreight and truck charges and is Briggs part number 698172. A replacement engine is also available for either model number for $1391.10 plus freight and truck charges and is part number 44K777-0027. You do the labor and save yourself $1300-$900! I'd go with the engine since there is no change-over time involved as there is with a shortblock.
