I am getting ready to tile my shower, and I'd like to get some ideas on tiling the ceiling. Is it worth the time and effort to try and match up grout lines with the walls? I am using 6x6 ceramic tile (American Olean Cabot Station from Lowes), and the ceiling is roughly 32x48. I have a feeling this will be an exercise in futility.

Some other ideas to ponder:

1. Tiling the ceiling on a diagonal. The negative is that my cheap tile saw does a horrible job cutting diagonals. The plastic guide is worthless. Can I use a score and snap? I do have one of those gizmos. I could also go to lowes and have them cut them, but that would mean stopping the job to go and have the tiles that aren't perfect halves cut. I won't be able to measure until we get to the edge, and I am concerned about the thinset drying

2. Using the same tile as the floor. It's 2x2 mosaic marble floor tile on a mesh backing. Will I have trouble getting these to stick? Should I cut them away from the mesh backing? That will be a PITA. Could I cut them into smaller 4 tile sections? Anyone have any experience with this?

3. If I go with the diagonal, are there any clever ways to measure the tiles to cut?

4. There is a round high hat light inside the shower. How do you suggest I measure and cut the tile?

5. Any other ideas for the ceiling? The line of this brand of tile is limited to the 6x6s. I guess I could also use the 12x12 Travertine I am using on the bathroom floor, I guess.

Thanks,

Bill

Your best bet is to do a diagonal layout on the ceiling. Use the 6x6's. Its done all the time cause its just about imposible to line up all the grout lines on the surrounding walls with the ceiling. It looks really good as well. I checked out that tile on line. Its a glazed ceramic and you should be able to use your snap cutter. If you are having difficulty with your wet saw maybe you need a better blade. You dont need to use the guide, mark the tile and freehand it. That stuff shouldnt be hard to cut on a wet saw at all. For the cuts around the fixture, make a series of cuts with your wet saw close together to the desired cut line and snap the pieces off. You can smooth the cut with the blade of the wet saw or clean it up with nippers. The cut doesnt have to be perfect as the fixture lens will cover the cut.:)
