My Heat Pump (compressor and fan) starts and stops about every 30 seconds. Eventually the Auxiliary heat kicks on to keep the house at temperature. The pump continues to try. The outside temperature is about 42F.

I turned the Air Conditioning on and it works fine. I turned the heat back on and the ON/OFF cycle starts again. The Filter is new.

Any ideas?

Don't allow the unit to do this on and off till we figure it out. For now, switch the stat to Emergency heat for now.

We will need more info.

The Make and Model of the unit?

Just a shot in the dark without any info but have you tried turning your temperature up 4 or 5 degrees higher just to make sure it is not the stat the same control wires are being made in cooling as in heat as far as your outside unit is concerned so there is seemingly no problem with that

Jay,
The unit says it was manufactured by Armstrong

Mike,
I can try that, but there is a switch for AC or Heat. i don't think they would both be on at the same time.

Id say check the charge. See if the unit has a low psi switch in it. Then the defrost board next. Any LED lights ?? what do they say?????? The unit can only run in heat or AC at one time the reversing valve is what will say it runs in.

i had a service guy come out and he thinks it is the expansion valve in the out door unit.

He bypassed the pressure switch and tried to put gas in, but the gages were showing a high pressure on the high side and very low on the low side. The gas would not go in. He thinks the valve is stopping the flow of gas. it makes some sense to me, what do you think? (Cost ~$600)

My neighbor recharged my gas about 1.5 yrs ago in the summer. (Unfortunately my neighbor moved away) We thought it was the Schrader valve. Because of this issue, the service guy recommends having a leak check before the other work b/c it will save cost if they find out there is a leak after they do the previous mentioned work. ($200 for the check + repair)

Overall, i'm looking at a cost around 1k - 1.5k+ for repair.

The unit is coming up on 8 yrs old. I'm thinking about getting a new unit. any recommendations on brand or type?

Thanks for the help!

Just to clarify, he wants to replace the TXV on the outdoor unit.

Am i right to assume the A/C will still work if this valve is bad?

Not there so Im at a loss here. What has the TXV got to do with the FAN in the outdoor unit?????. Yes the AC should run with out the outdoor TXV working.

I turned the Air Conditioning on and it works fine.
