I am planning on installing some new laminate on an island in my kitchen. 2 questions. First is MDF the best substrate to use under sheet laminate or is there something else you would reccomend? Next when trimming the laminate to size can a router with a flush trim bit be used or do you need a laminate trimmer. I just wasn't sure if there was a specific advantage to having a laminate trimmer as opposed to a full size router which I already own. Thanks!

I love MDF for it's smoothness - and hate it for it's water absorption properties....

I've used a router to trim my laminates with superb results. Cut the laminate so it overhangs just a bit (1/16th - 1/8th inch) and use the router to smooth it to the countertop.

MDF is fine-I used to use Sears 1/2" laminate trim bit in my
standard router for home projects. Keep a fine file handy for any sharp edges & final finishing............

Trimming laminate works much better using a laminate trim bit that has a bearing. That way you can't damage or burn the edge laminate.:)

just watch out when you get to the corners you you dont chip them, always cut the corners with the blade spinning towards the inside of the counter.

You'll get a feel for the router. One direction pulls the bit comfortably into the workpiece, travelling in the other direction tends to drive the bit away from the workpiece. Keep in mind edging bits are straight and trim bits have a slight chamfer. After trimming the remaining edge should be gently knocked down with a ******* file.:D
