I'm priming the new drywall for my bathroom with Kilz2.

Wondering if I should go ahead and run the primer over the hardibacker in my shower area before I apply the thinset and tile.

Would it help, hurt, or just be a waste of time and money?

Hi Brian,

No, do not apply Kilz to your hardibacker. Kilz is primarily used to seal stains so they don't bleed through paint.

I'm a painter not a tile man but I think it would be a bad idea. A little errant paint shouldn't hurt anything but to paint the CB solid might affect the tile's bond

BTW - I don't use KilzII because it does a poor job of sealing stains but there are many that report adhesion issues with the latex kilz!

If Hardie wanted their backerboard primed with paint they would do it themselves.:)
