Hi. It is time to replace my 20-year old Trane heat pump. I am new to the world of heat pumps and air handlers and everything. My question is - is it worth the extra money to get a variable speed air handler? I live in Austin, TX, in an approx. 850 sq. ft. condo (2 story). I was quoted a 2-ton Lennox XP15-024, with a pure air purification system thrown in. Does variable speed make a difference in warmer climates? I understand with variable speed, you can control the humidity inside the house? Will that keep the unit from running as often? Also, is an additional air cleaner worth it?
Thanks!
Thanks!

If you go to 2 stage it will run more. Even if you don't go 2 stage, if it is sized right, it will run more. Of course at a lower cost. Air conditioners can only dehumidify when they are running. If the air conditioner is oversized it will not dehumidify well at all. I would suggest the variable speed fan but you have to decide if you can afford the extra cost.
