We have a Kenmore model C978 5279 (also has R350 TLAGLO marked) that just started making noise around the thermostat/temperature dials at the inside, back middle of the unit.
I've heard noise from around the compressor before in another fridge so I would recognize that but never heard a racket (buzzy kind of vibration) from around the temp dials.
If I turn the 'Fridge' (not the 'Freezer') dial to 'Off', wait a couple of seconds and then turn it back to 'Normal' , it will run fine for 24 hours. No loss of cold either in the freezer or fridge compartments.
This is an old fridge but it has never given me any trouble before. Anything simple I could check/replace?

It sounds like it is the fan that is causing the noise in your fridge.

Yup, it was the evaporator fan. A good guy at a local appliance repair place showed me how to get at it. It was a bear of a job though. I had to remove the fridge & the freezer doors to get at a screw holding a small access panel on. After that, the whole floor panel of the freezer slid out & exposed the fan. The styrafoam around the fan looked burned, as though the fan was wobbling, rubbing.
Been running with the new fan for about 4 days now -- looks like its good for another 20 years ... don't tell the wife ;-)
Thanks for the web site recommendation. I'll keep it on file.
