We own a 50's era home with lathe and plaster walls. The living room is typical for this age home with coved ceilings and swept curves that include the fireplace. The sore thumb? Sometime during the prior owners time they were taken by the thought it would be nice to have a brick fireplace with an insert. So rather than have a pro installation, they stuffed a lovely (read uglier than all get out!) Buck wood insert and applied SlimBrick to the mantle.
We have removed the insert. Its amazing they didn't have a chimney fire! Now we would like to get rid of the SlimBrick, and would like to do it with a minimum amount of damage to the plaster. What are the best techniques? Am I doomed to learn the art of plaster application in the middle of the main living space for all to see my success (or failure)?
Secondly, we NEVER use the fireplace and would like to clean it so it looks new and unused. What are the best techniques to accomplish this?

The rule of thumb for removing materials stuck to drywall or plaster walls is to simple go at it with a pry bar with the knowledge in advance that you will have to do some surface repairs, sand, prime/seal, and paint.
