The washing machine is a Kenmore series 90 with a 3-speed motor - - according to my wife, it's not agitating back and forth, it goes in one direction and tangles the clothes around the agitator - - it will spin and empty the water without a problem. She said it made a grunting/grinding noise.

Is this a simple fix??

!st make sure it's spinning, usuall problem is broken drive coupler located between the motor and gearcase (2 white plastic disc with a black rubber coupler between them), if it is spinning than sounds like a bad gear case (not a common problem) if gearcase is bad it usually has oil leaking out of it
