piece a) a large (1.5" diameter 7" long) spring with hooks on both ends
piece b) a 14" long 2x6
piece c) a 1.75" drill bit
I am planning on drilling a hole in the center of the 2x6 and then inserting the spring into it.
the problem is that I'm not sure how to fasten the spring hook that goes through to the 2x6. Here's my best shot at a diagram
..........7

..........J
where the .....'s can be ignored and the "7" and the "J" represent the hooks (the actual spring hooks curl more than the alphanumerics in the diagram) at the bottom of the spring.
I need some sort of rounded pole to stick through the spring hook ("J") so that when the spring pulls up, it doesn't go back through the hole and back out of the 2x6.
I might be able to use a pole from a door latch but how would I fasten the ends so that it stays secure to the 2x6?
any ideas?
TIA,

A dowel rod of the appropriate diameter might work. If you could cut it long enough to lay along the length of the 2X6 and use screws (predrilled) to fasten the ends to the 2X6.
Another option would be a metal rod (also of the right diameter). This could be fastened to the 2X6 with cable staples (used in house wiring) or fence staples.
