I am refininshing red oak hardwood floors in a 1939bunglow. It appears this is the first time they have been refinshed. My friend has used 80 grit sandpaper and thinks that will be enough sanding, as the wood feels smooth to the touch. Should I go over them again with a finer grit sandpaper?

If the final sanding was with the grain then sanding scratches won't show much on oak. One part of oak grain is very hard and will be slightly higher than the other @ 80 grit. This may give you a wood-grainy reflection unless a lot of coats are built up. Maybe the "honest craftsman" look you want? Personally I would not want too glassy a floor in such a house.

Thanks. I think that you are right. I don't want too glassey a finish as the house has a little bit of a rustic look. Thanks for helping me think it through. cj
