I'm going to build a garage with future living space above it. I'm in New Hampshire. I have a set of plans that I like and it calls for 2x4 wall construction. I've been told 2x6 construction is common in NH but not for strength - just to get more wall cavity for fiberglass insulation. With the many choices of insulation on the market I'd like to use 2x4 construction but still be able to insulate well in the future. What is my best choice?

Thanks for the reply. Can I get the same R-value with 3 1/2 inches of spray foam that I'd get from 5 1/2 inches of fiberglass?

I don't believe you could use 5 1/2 inches of fiberglass between 2x4 studs. That would mean the fiberglass is compacted, and it should be loose to trap the air.

3in of spray foam would be around R-21
