At the same time as my refridgerator/freezer stopped working, a black liquid started leakng out from underneath it.

Any ideas what might have happened?

First thing that comes to mind is a failed compressor. The internal parts are ground up and mixed with refrigerant oil. This would leak out as an oily textured Black or "Metallic " colored fluid.
