I'm preparing to lay hardwood flooring in my new home. I'm doing this during construction.

I have two transitions to install. One is to carpet and the other to linoleum so both are lower than the 3/4" hardwood. I have lots of experience installing floors and making transition pieces out of the the prefinished flooring but I have never been 100% happy with the results.

For example - for a 3/4" hardwood to linoleum transition, I would take a strip of prefinished floor, cut a dado on the underside of the strip (on the linoleum side), and the cut a bevelon the face of the transition piece down to the linoluem. The dado accomodates the thickness of the linoleum and its underlay.

The shape of the piece and the fit is perfect. The part I'm neve happy with is the finishing of the bevel I've cut. I can never seem to get an exact perfect stain / poly combination.

I really would prefer to cut the transitions and somehow preserve the face of the prefinished transition piece. I think this means I need to somehow cut the piece on the underside to the face is beveled down but doesn't need to be cut.

I know this is long winded but hopefully someone understands and maybe has some experience with this.
