Hello everyone,
I am in the process of laying tile in an "L" shaped kitchen with an island in the middle. How do I determine the middle of the room or the starting point so my tiles are straight?

I don't get too concerned about finding the middle. Just lay the tiles out dry and rearrange until you find a layout you like.

That's what I was going to do but you know when you get caught reading books and looking a DIY shows they give you a big scientific breakdown of how to do it. I should still snap chalk lines along the longest wall correct?

Once you have a layout that's pleasing to the eye, chalk lines can help you remember where the joints were. I would snap two at 90° to each other somewhere in the middle so that you can proceed out from them toward the walls.
