Hi gang -
We are tiling a small powder room (3x6) in the basement. I pulled the old vinyl off of the
concrete slab and while looking at the "fit" for everything, the toilet flange caught my eye.

After laying the Ditra and a few tiles down for inspection, I see that the combination
is above the level of the flange even before any thinset is taken into consideration.

A problem that immediately hit me is that there is no way to get the Johnny-bolts in and
out - fixable by trimming the tiles so a non-issue. The real question for me: Is this okay
and will the wax ring seal properly? If not, what are my options?
As a side question, a friend told me that he never caulks all the way around the toilet.
He leaves a small section in back uncaulked so that he can see if an internal leak ever
develops. Good idea or not?
Thanks for your time!

Thinking further on this... perhaps better asked in plumbing.
If s moderator agrees, could you move the post for me?

No problem. Just install a thick wax seal. I believe it is either a #10 or 11 from Oatey. It will also have a black bell attached to it. You could install a spacer plate if you wished, but be sure to silicone between the two flanges to ensure a good seal.

What you have there is not an issue. Use the taller wax ring and be done with it.:)
