I am making roman shades that are to be hung from a decorative rod with clips. How do you rig the shades so that they do not pull in from the sides? In the past I have always hund them from a board on the inside of the window.

Hi and welcome to the forum! Is this going to be a working or a faux shade? If it's working, you still need to mount it on a board and just make it look like it's hanging from a rod, in order for it to function correctly.
Is this a regular roman or a relaxed roman? Romans work best with some sort of weight rod at the bottom, but even without one, a regular roman shouldn't be pulling in at the sides. How wide is the shade? Are you lining it?

These will be relaxed, working Roman shades. One will be 85" wide by 78" long and the other will be 77" wide by 78" long.
They will probably be pulled up most of the time, but will sometimes be closed all the way. And they will be lined.

I make them an inch or two wider than the finished width and then make a small tuck at each end of the board. This adds some ease and extra fabric at the bottom to keep them from pulling in. I also add a covered weight rod which I tack at the top of each stationery ring (I put a few extra stationery folds at the bottom). If you're going to have more than one swoop since the shades are so wide, I would add an extra inch for each swoop and make a small pleat (1/2" on each side) and then just add an extra inch, to make a 1/2" tuck at each end. To me, one large swoop looks like a big sheet hanging there.

Thanks. :) I will try that. They will have one swoop in the center, then pulled up on each side about 18" from each side. I know that since they will be so large, it's not going to be easy.

If you make the sides smaller than the center, you will have a sort of hybrid balloon or london shade, rather than relaxed and also the center would droop down more than the sides unless you adjust the pleat sizes. Consider making all the swoops the same size.
