I have a mahogany desk which has two small areas both of which are smaller than the size of a dime and which are basically worn areas. Using the actual stain that matches the finish as well as touch up markers I have been unable to touch this area up at all. The stain appears to either evaporate or soak in as quickly as I can apply it. I don't know what else to do. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

There are products available from furniture refinishing supply houses made for this project. What I have used for 30+ years is artist oil colors to mix the proper color, apply thinned with paint thinner, allow to dry and top coat.

If you're not used to this procedure it can be tricky. The advantage is by using oil colors you can wipe the color off with paint thinner if it isn't right and try again. The paint thinner won't hurt the existing finish.

When you get the color right, you can lightly topcoat with whatever finish is already there, sand lightly, and steel wool it down to achieve the proper sheen.

Typical mixes for a mahogany finish would consist of vermillion, pthalo blue and van dyke brown.
