My AVR recently went silent, that is, it powers up but we get no sound from any of the speakers. I've tried all the inputs, from FM radio to video to tape and PC and still nothing.

The headphones don't work at all either.

I went ahead and opened it and checked all the fuses that I could find and all are OK. I also didn't see any fried IC's or transistors on any of the boards, but there could be some hidden since I couldn't see everything.

I went ahead and did the factory reset and still have no sound.

Any ideas?

This AVR was purchased a couple of years ago from Onkyo Refurb so I'm wondering if it is even worth sending out for repair.

First the obvious: Did someone accidentally turn off the speakers? Some have speaker switches on the front panel, others are accessed through the menu. I'm not talking about "Mute" (although that's another possibility).

That unit is certainly worth taking to a repair shop, even if you have to pay for them to look at it. If it costs $150 to repair, you won't have to spend $400+ on a new receiver.

Got sidetracked with work and kid related stuff, sorry to taking so long to respond...here's the latest:

I replaced the Onkyo with a low end 35W stereo reciever that we have and found that all the speakers are OK. This reciever only as one AUX-in so it can only handle one input source, which in this case is a PC. The sound quality was actually quite good which I believe must be the result of the Sound Blaster Xi sound card in the PC.

The Onkyo had a tape player, HDTV, PC and Ipod as input sources and was purchased on U-bid for $220 as an Onkyo factory refurb. It came with a one year warranty, but that has expired now.

In looking at the boards inside the Onkyo and judging by the fact the rest of the AVR appears to be working fine my guess is that an IC or some other component necessary to send the sound to the speakers has blown.

If I knew which board was the main one or was the one most likely to be the problem, then I could possibly use a meter to see to if it is outputing anything.

If it's dead then I could maybe just order a replacement and put it in---it all looks like it connects via ribbon cable--then see if that fixes the problem.

I'll keep checking on the internet to see if anyone else has info. I'll even call Onkyo to see what they think and to see if they would sell me a board.

Since the reciever was a refurb and didn't cost that much, I'm thinking that paying alot to have it repaired won't make that much sense. I'll see what happens as I do a bit more research.
