I moved into an 8-year-old house about three months ago. I found two of these mystery hardware devices in the closet of our mudroom/laundry room. They have white wheels on either side, and the pieces slide so that you can make them wider or narrower. The previous homeowners didn't leave a bunch of junk behind, so I wonder if this is something I want to keep. Any idea what it is?

Those are appliance movers. You adjust it to the correct length, then tip the appliance to one side and slide 'em under the edge, wheels down.

Most newer reefer's already have wheels, but they could be used for washer/dryers, stoves, etc.

Unfortunately, because of the width of the rollers, they still pretty much only move easily in a straight line. So be careful the item doesn't slide off.
