I just bought a home with an older, non-working NuTone intercom system. There is no power to the unit. If I follow the low voltage power wires they go out of the main box and up the wall. Any ideas as to where the transformer is typically located so that I can find and fix/replace?

Since many of these intercoms were installed by the homeowner, the transformer could be anywhere from the attic to the circuit breaker box. Best bet is to either track the wires to their origin or replace the transformer with a new one that you install.

You might check the Nutone web site for customer service help. Nutone was bought by Broan a few years ago and almost all of the Nutone employees who were knowledgeable on the intercoms are gone.
