I have a gas insert in a older fireplace the people that lived here before have dropped a plate of steel over the tube on top of the fire box when i burn it it puts out soot and turns the glass doors black .. I need some help here dose it need vented or not its propane

Stop burning it!

Get a pro in there to do a Level II inspection and guide you as to your options.
