Installing a couple of 30" doors. The 30" is the door itself, the casing/frame is 3/4 inch on both sides making the total span just shy of 32". What size of rough opening do I need to leave for width and height? It's a standard 80" (really 79.5") height.

usually 2 inches. if the rough opening is really square, you can do with a little less.

2 inches for width and 2 inches for height as well?

As for being really square, I'm going to try, but its a basement and the floor isn't the flattest.

Minimum framed rough opening width should be 32 inches for 30 inch doors. Allow extra width if sides are not plumb. R.O. height should be 82 1/2 inches assuming finished floor will be installed before door is installed.

One more question - should I hang the doors before or after carpet? I've heard of people doing this both ways.

Install the doors before installing the carpet. You want the jamb legs sitting on solid, and carpet is anything but solid. The doors can always be shortened a bit if needed.

1/2 inch a good gap to shim the jamb legs up?
