On a Craftsman self propelled-what keeps the front wheels locked in gear? I can push the lever ahead and the front wheels turn but the lever won;t stay forward. Should the lever go over center and stay locked in? It doesn'nt look like lever assembly can be taken apart.

Yes, as long as you're holding down the safety/kill bail, the self-propel handle should push forward, over center, until it clicks in the engaged position. It should stay there until you release the safety bail. If it doesn't operate this way, you can replace the control assy, or you can open it up and see what went wrong inside. Chances are you'll need to replace it because of a broken plastic catch inside.
