What kind of caulk? and where on the fireplace?
Generally all you can do is peel and scrape it off.

It is a heat resistant silicone caulk on the brick around the edges of the fireplace door unit.
I was going to use a wire brush attached to a cordless drill, but the unit is brass and I don't want to risk scratching the surface.

That's tough, wrap a rag around the blade of a putty knife and use paint thinner for a lubricant - go slow ;)
