Wife purchased a chandelier that plugs in and wants it hard wired into the existing receptlicle for a ceiling fan. Is this possible and what wires would go where? Have hung numer ous ceiling fans but all were meant ot be hard wired.

Read your post again. She bought a chandelier that plugs in, but you want it hardwired for a ceiling fan. Which is it, a chandelier or ceiling fan? You can't hardwire the cord into a receptacle. It can be hardwired inside a proper ceiling box to the existing wiring. Is there a ceiling box at the location where the fan/chandelier will go?

Yes it is a chandelier. I want to wire it to the ceiling box i.e. what I was calling the ceiling fan recepticle. I believe that I need to cut off the plug end and wire it to the black and white wire in the ceiling box. There is not difference in the color of the wires so it does not appear to matter which wire is connected to which color. Also there is no third wire to connect to the ground so it appears to be a self grounding light.

no self grounding light. but if you want to make it safe(r), you can buy the wire at a parts store, run it from the fixture up to the equipment ground in the ceiling box. and for note:not standard but most fixture cord, on 1 wire will be ribbed(neutral).Yes it is a chandelier. Just wanted clarification. You said "receptacle", and I envisioned you stretching the cord down a wall and poking a hold in the sheetrock. See, where pictures help. As Sparky said, the ribbed wire is your neutral and the other should be hooked to the black wire in your ceiling junction box. Do you have a spanner so you can hang the chandelier? Make sure it is in there before you go wiring it.
