my backyard is full of holes from the previous owners dog.what is the best way to level so i can plant a lawn

I've got a similar project to look forward to now that the ground has thawed.

I would say fill the holes with your fill dirt, wash, rinse, repeat. After it settles, you'll have to go back and do it some more.

Don't bother renting/buying a roller. They aren't heavy enough to do it without shoveling the dirt into the hole anyway, but they are heavy enough to compact the soil, which will make it difficult for your new grass to grow healthy roots.
