My garage door opener will open without any problems but it won't close using the remore. The only way it closes is if I hold the wall switch until it closes all the way. Nothing is blocking the sensors.

Check the pressure control on the opener. As the opener and tracks age, it takes a bit more pressure to open and close the door. The opener may be confusing the extra pressure with hitting something.
By pressing and holding the switch, you're telling the opener to ignore the pressure sensor and close/open anyway.
After you've adjusted the pressure dials, check to ensure the safety still works on the door.

The most common cause of your problem is in the safety beam. Either they are misaligned, broken wire or need replacemnt. The Doorman doorsopenecrater
