My friend used venetian plaster for his family room and I loved it. My dining room currently has maroon wallpaper. I would like to redo the room with a maroon venetian plaster and am wondering if I am ok to do this on top of the wallpaper? I cant find any info regarding this, just that the surface needs to be smooth- which it is. Anyone have any advice???

Dont do it!! The moisture in the plaster will most likely cause the wall paper to peal off and blister up.

Never ever put anything over wall papers! If you do you will be sorry. Most wallpapers use a water based glue that will rehydrate and turn loose when they become wet. So when you put a water based product on you will get bubbles and the edges will start coming loose. There are some products out there that you can spray on that will harden the wall paper and glue so you can paint over them, but if your going to do that just strip the wall paper, it's not that hard. Probably not what you wanted to hear but venetian plaster whether it's the real or acrylic is too much work to risk the wall paper coming loose.

Even if your wallpaper is in excellent condition and you prime it with oil based primer to seal it, the glue will eventually fail. Plastering over it may seem like a convenient solution, but that paper will be even harder to strip once it's peeling with plaster (and most likely subsequent coats of paint) on top. Beware!!! The project will not have a happy ending....
