A little more info would be helpful such as a make and model of the fireplace as it could be numerous things dependent on what you have. Also if you include if it's a vent free or vented fireplace. If it has a standing pilot or intermittent pilot ignition.

You may also want to consider posting this info in the fireplace section of the Interior forums.

Like said .If this is a vent free unit . The built in oxygen depletion sensor is bad on it.

From your description, you must have my old set of logs. Are your logs equiped with a thermostat? This type of log set will switch off then back on as needed. If the thermostat is defective it can short cycle.

The thermostat can be identified by a metal bulb with a metal tube attached. The bulb will be several inches long and placed near the lower front section of the log set. Don't confuse the thermostat bulb with the thermocouple bulb that is near the pilot.

this can be a number of different problems with either easy or more complex solutions depending on your level of mechanical ability.
now i saw an oxygen depletion sensor mentioned earlier. this little device causes more confusion due to its name alone. this device, and i call it that loosly, works off the idea that if oxygen is depleted the mixture of gas to air will sour and deplete the pilot of combustible air. this is a function built into the design of your pilot assembly and is no real discernable part. on top of that your pilot would shut down in this scenario as well.
my thoughts, and like others have said more info would be grand, are either thermopile my be going bad, control valve (at worst) or a simple need for cleaning can change everything (sometime a weak pilot will not properly thermopile but remain to heat the thermocouple - although this is the least likely). its hard to nail down anything w/o knowing what we are dealing with.

It seems the vents at the top of the fireplace needed to be opened more. Everything is working fine........for now. Thanks for all your help
