I'd like to put some recess shelving in my hall walls. How do you construct the "cubby holes"?

Cut out the drywall between the studs the height you wish. Nail blocking to the studs below & above the opening the depth of material you are planning to line the niche with. The spacing between the studs if they are 16" centers will be 14 1/2". The depth will be 4" to 6" depending on the wall.

Before you start punching out board, I suggest you find out where any electrical or mechanical service is with respect to the wall you are considering.
