I am adding a plug in my attic for a untility light to plu into. What a the codes regarding these. Do they have to be GFCI and can they be place facing up. DO they have to have a waterproof cover, etc...

Not being a smartone, but why not just install lighting with a switch as you enter the attic? I wouldn't install any receptacle face up unless it was in the proper box with proper cover with plugs. You could always mount it on a rafter.

I have a cover plate that goes over the recptacle and a box that will keep the cable tight and in palce. I was planing on screw the box to the rafter. The box has ears that can be screwed to.

The simplest way to wire this is to split a cable close to where you want to put your junction box, then wire nut the new cable out to the recp, and I would go one more step from there to a light on a pull chain. You do not need a GFI in the attic. I would find out what is on the wire that you need to cut to make sure that the circuit is not overloaded. You cannot bury the junction box, so hang it from a rafter.

There are no special requirements for GFCI or face ups or covers etc for attic receptacles. If the box is near the opening then the cabling must be properly protected from damage.
