Yes you for sure cant use the same flue that was on the gas for a wood firplace. You need a new flue there. Also look into a make up air near the fireplace from the outside ,for air to the fireplace flue.;)

I think a pro would consider the job a brand new install $$$, except the gas line.

depends on what you have. I hear people all the time say they have a vented gas log fireplace and what they really have is vented gas logs in a masonary or prefab fireplace. in those circumstances removing the logs and getting a proper grate and either capping the line or adding a lighter bar is all that is necessary. however, other fireplaces ie direct vents and b vents are a completely different matter. consult a pro.

wise decision snoopy. i got rid of my gas fireplace recently to exchange to a wood one. Glad I did... Unfortunately I needed to get a pro to do the job, because of some building insurance policies. Hope you get you job done..
