I would like to illuminate a 3x5 flag about 20 ft in the air.
I have 120v available near the flag pole.
What size lighting fixture do I need to use to properly light the flag?.
Should I use quartz halogen and what wattage ?What type of fixture etc.
Any info would be appreciated and any web sights that would be helpful would be greatly appreciated.

"Properly" is a vague term. There are no laws regarding lighting the flag, and you can anything you want, or nothing at all.

You need to decide on your needs.

Will you be lighting the flag every night, 365 days a year, or will you only be lighting it some nights?

How much light do you actually want? Enough to light up the whole neighborhood so you can the flag from a huge distance (which will probably earn you complaints from neighbors), or just enough to be able to say that you have it lighted?

How much do you want to spend on electricity to supply the light?

Do you want a redundant setup, so that when a bulb burns out there will still be light on the flag?

if you want your flag to'shine' at night, find or make it out of the same material they use in saftey vests, florescent material.

IF you decide to 'invent' this new idea ... "I want Royalties" ... the flag will glow in the dark, using any color you use, from a simple halogen bulb !!!

:thinker:

by the way, it can be made very inexpensive if you use microwave vinyl welders to weld the different materials together. I know this because I design circuit boards for these 30,000 volt 60 kilowattpower supplies. They used to be all vaccum tube rectifiers, now i make circuit boards, guaranteed for life, not 3 months !

picture of one of my boards ... rated for 30,000 volts DC for 6 amps, but can be paralleled to run 30 amp systems (radar systems). If you want to convert an old RF Weldr (30Khz, from 3 phase vacuum tube to solid state, let me know, i'll tell you how to do it !
