I would like to fabricate a shear pin for my tractor mounted snowblower. I changed the u-joint and the collar is a different size. Does anyone know what kind of metal to use? It's 1/4". Would a cut off bolt shaft work? If so, what hardness? Thanks,

start with the cheap ( non graded )bolts at a hardware store
then a grade 5 bolt. even grade 8 may be ok depending on the strength of the system.
