Doors and Windows - Adjustable door threshold assembly - stripped screw

Hello!

I tried to adjust the threshold assembly on my back door today to close up a gap under the door. Unfortunately, it appears that the builder who installed it screwed it in to the point that they stripped the screw.

The assembly is kind of like this one:

I though about going to buy a screw extractor to remove the screw, but from looking at the schematic on a similar one online, and by trying to remove a screw from my front door threshold, it looks like these aren't just normal screws, but some sort of integrated assembly. Meaning, I don't think i can actually remove the screw all the way and put a new one in. I don't want to use a screw extractor to further damage the screw if I can't actually remove the screw to replace it.

Any ideas on how I can loosen the screw to raise the threshold, without having to replace the whole assembly?

those adjusting screws only adjust so far. if it is up all the way and still has a gap, you will have to remove the threshold strip and shim under it or put an adjustable strip on the bottom of the door.:thumbup:

No, the problem is it is down all the way, and they stripped the screw. I would like to unscrew it some, but I can't. Plus, I don't think I can remove and replace the screw, I believe it is bolted into the threshold bottom.

How easy, or if, depends on the manufacturer.

The pic appears similar to an Endura Z sill. If this is the case, you're in luck. The cap & sub assembly are replaceable. (You need to call them – they will ask inswing or outswing, length, & what color cap). If it's some other brand you could extract the screw; dig the nut out of the base; then epoxy a replacement in.

i forgot to ask if ALL the adjusting screws were stripped or just one or two? if you can get some kind of leverage tool at the end of the adj. part and apply light upward pressure/lifting while loosening the adj. screw, it may catch the second or third thread and move upward. hopefully, it is the screw that is stripped and not the threaded nut/ferrell.
worst case senario is replacement of the adj. part(as suggested) or the whole strip. the threshold is probably not very expensive compared to the heat loss!:thinker:

Get a dremel tool with a small grinder bit on it. Cut yourself a new groove in the top of the screw that will accept a flat head screwdriver. Should solve your problem without trying to replace the whole unit.

I think some misunderstood or else I didn't explain properly that the screw head was stripped, and not the screw threads.

In any event, I was able to unscrew it with a screw extractor several turns, enough to close the gap.

It doesn't look like the screw can be removed from the threshold unit and replaced. Perhaps if I had an identical unit that I could eyeball I would try to forceably remove and replace it, but I don't want to risk removing the stripped screw for fear I won't be able to get a new one to thread into whatever catch mechanism they have.
