if it's a newer furnace the flame sensor could be dirty. pull it out and clean it with sandpaper or emory cloth

I second the motion. That is THE best starting place.

I was taught never to use sandpaper. Fine steel wool or Scotch Brite.

Using sandpaper on a flame rod is asking for trouble as it will leave (relatively) deep scratches in the rod that will soon tarnish.

Scotch-Brite is the correct thing to use. Fine steel wool in a pinch.
