our furnace is in the attic in our one story home. I went to check on it and noticed it was hot up there! It seems possibly that the heat could be leaking out the ducts? or is it normal to have that much heat up in the attic when it's running. I will assume so. Who should I be calling to have this checked out? I have a home warranty program, but can i get them to look at it and say we think the ducts are leaking in the attic or to have them check the furnace, or just pay someone to look at the system as a whole?

If I call someone, who should I call, what should have them inspect?

Thanks much!

Hot you say? Not just somewhat warm? What kind of attic space is this exactly? Surely it is not the kind of attic that gets ventilation.

I have been down basements with furnaces running in cold below-zero weather and the furnace itself doesn't seem to be heating the basement very well. The exception is more for boilers that put out 180 degree water and the boiler pipes are running across the ceiling all over down there and THAT is what warms up a basement. But on lower heat output high efficiency ones - not so much.

On one furnace where I was at the other day, I had to even go over to it and open up the register on the furnace to let the basement area near it warm up enough so I could feel a little more comfortable working on the washing machine in the open room about 8 feet from the furnace. Even with the register open and just blasting out the air, the rest of the old basement was still pretty cold.

I'd like to know more about that attic space. Obviously if the attic is really sealed well and insulated, and perhaps is relatively small, I can see heat building up. And uninsulated flex? ducts surely would contribute to this. I'd also like to know what your outside temperature is?

Your ductwork is probably leaking. If it is that bad, the leaks should be easy to find. Your home warranty isn't likely to cover such things. I suggest you call an HVAC service company.
