Our bathroom has been getting renovated. The walls were torn down, and this house is old (1930 or older) and we are now worrying about asbestos in the plaster. More concerning is the fact that an air vent's wrapping (looks like asbetos, and house is old too) has been ripped.

Now what? Children live here and now what to do we do... we're worried about ambient air asbestos now!

The asbestos be fine if not disturbed. Have someone come out and test everything to be sure it truly is asbestos.

To have your house abaited, it's VERY expensive. If you want to demo all this yourself, mist/spray everything down with water to keep the airborne dust down and you should be okay.
Wear dust masks/respirators and wear a Tyvek suit, cover everything in plastic.

Right, mist it down, wear a good mask (not the loose drywall cheap ones) and clean it up. IMO do not call someone, it could shut the whole job down. If the house was built in 30's and the pipes have a white or even black wrap, I would say 100% asbestos. Plaster on the other hand is a toss up. Most of the time, no. If the house was built in the winter, guys would add asbestos to the plaster to help with installation. Good luck!

Make sure even with misting everything down that you isolate this room from the rest of the house. Cover vents etc etc. Take one day and just demo everything you suspect could contain asbestos and be done with it.

Not sure if this helps here, but we bought a air purifier when we had a mold issue. I don't recall anyone suggesting one for asbestos, but maybe ?

Although a vast amount and the frequency of exposure to asbestos is required to be considered dangerous, I'm reserved about the mist spray advice. It is a bit costly and inconvenient-but then its your life-and here's the choice.

1. :mask: WEAR PROTECTIVE CLOTHING prior to chipping off a block off your bathroom wall (ensure your other family members are outside the vicinity when doing so).

2. Send the sample block for laboratory testing-contact your nearest medical centre for details.

3. Take necessary action-if asbestos is confirmed-you could shift temporarily nearby and leave it to construction experts.

4. Do have the air checked for remains in the air before moving back in.

Hope you read this on time.

You might also want to check local/state laws - you might be breaking the law by doing it yourself.
