The knob that controls the speed of my ceiling fan broke so I decided to change it. I wanted it to be white so I decided to change the fan light switch and the hall light switch at the same time so they would match.
After turning the power off I unhooked the hall light switch and connected the new. Then I unscrewed the fan speed and lights and pulled them out to see what needed to be attached to the replacements. I reconnected everything and turned the power back on. Both lights work but not the fan. I do not know what I did wrong.
I thought I was careful but I guess not anyway I need your help.
The wires that lead to the fan control and light have a black, red, ground, and white. The hall light has black, white, and ground.
The ground wires were twisted together and crimped. I removed the crimp to add the green wire, since the old speed control did not have a green. I used a wire nut to reconnect these since I don't have a "crimper".(Is that the correct term?) All the white wires are connected together and pushed out of the way.
Can you tell me what should be connected to what?
I would be glad to redo anything that is wrong with someone's guidance.
Thanks so much for any help you may give me.

I have not done much reading as I thought this would be a simple case of replacing old for new. I have replaced outlets and switches in the past without any problems.

It would have been simple, except you violated rule number one. That is, make detailed notes on how everything is connected before you start. You can't rely on memory.
We can't help until we know ALL the wiring. Tell us all the cables exist at the switch box and at the ceiling box. At the hall light too if it;s switch is in the same box. Then tell us what wires are in those cables and and how those wires are connected to anything. It will help us if you tell us what you keft alone and what you messed around with.
I'm still unclear what you actually replaced and what you kept as is. I will tell you that if you put a dimmer switch on the fan then you likely fried the dimmer and/or damaged the fan. Fan's cannot be controlled by typical dimmer switches. They need special speed controls.

it sounds like u dont have the hot wire going to the fan speed controll commen u have it going to the switch wire hence forth the light gets power when u turn it on but the fan does not there should be 3 wires plus a ground on the controler one should be the switch leg for the light the usally red or yellow, the commen should be black and then u should have a third wire red or yellow depending on manufacture on what colers are used, should be your fan switch wire hope this helped

short the fan speed two wires together, if the fan runs fast, then its the speed control, if it still does not work, ... you've got it wired. with a simple ohm meter, you could find the field coils of the fam and the volt meter will tell you which wires are the power lines. sounds like the white is common (ground), the black is the 120 VAC and one will be for the light or one set of field coild for low speed and the other for high speed ... this info may help ! screw in the bulbs, use the ohms settting to see if you can measure the bulb filaments, then unscrew the bulbs and see if the meter drops to infinity ... that is the light wire, if you read about 10 ohms, its probably the high spped, 5 ohms would be the low speed.
