Was wondering what your thoughts are on Ductless A/C units with an attached heat pump?

I am finishing my basement and we currently have 1 return and 2 supplies down from our Central AC unit that is installed in the attic (Ran 2 flex from attic, through a closet down to the basement.) I had an AC guy come down to see if I can add another supply since I would think the basement would stay cooler in the summer anyway... Without even looking at the unit I have, he recommended getting a ductless. He was saying my lines were running too long from the attic and i wouldn't have enough air coming down. He recommeded putting the one supply in the 1 room opposite and the other in the office room down by the living room. Then he said to adda a ductless to the living room area.. I really didn't want to do that since I don't have $3K to spend.

Does anyone have any other suggesstions? Can another supply run off the existing? Can I 'branch' from the other 2 flex that is in the basement?

Thanks

Your guy is telling you tha fact! You could add another but he is right air flow will be light! 3gs for a ductless Id go for it!

..but Airman, doesn't basements stay 'cool' in the summer anyway???? If i had those to supplies, plus leave the door open from the basement to the downstairs, wouldn't the cold air flow down?

Also, we have a window in the area, can we just put a small unit in there?

I just didn't budget 3G's for a ductless....:wall:

If you don't need heat I would not do anything.

How well does it maintain temp now with the way it's set up ?

Cooling should not be a big issue being the basement but humidity removal might be if your return isn't pulling hard enough down there. A window unit would be an option as long as the window you're planning on using is not for egress.

Heating could be accomplished with electric baseboards.

Thanks Mat...

Well the basement is in the process of being finished so not quite sure how it is going to be....

i think I will have it wired in that area where the ductless will go and test it out this summer. If all is well, i will leave as is. If not, I can always add since the wiring will be all set.

I do have a dehumidifier down there now so wouldn't that take care of the humidity?

i will be adding electric baseboard down there.. I do have gas/hot water baseboard now for the upstaira but it would cost me a small fortune to hook into that.. Plus it is too small... new unit, etc...

Ill go with Matt . For the cost Id sure look into a window unit that is a heat pump also. that would be the best way for you to go. Wire in now for a 220V plug in outlet
