We have been researching wood burning inserts over the net and find all of the references starting with the phrase, "...designed for use in masonary fireplaces...". We currently have a gas fireplace insert and would like to switch to a wood burning style-is this possible?

While I don't think it is possible due to a gas fire will have a controlled burn as opposed to wood fire, I would look up the specs of the insert. If you have no luck there, seek the advise of a fireplace shop.

I will say this, if you gas insert has any knockouts removed or any part drilled out for the installation of a gas line, I wouldn't switch it over.
