The back wall of our fireplace is falling down, so it would be unsafe tol build a fire. Should we remove the back wall and replace it with a new 3" wall of fire brick and mortar joints, or should we leave it there and build a new wall of fire brick and mortar in front of the existing decaying wall? The original wall is only a false front of brick-like facia, with about an inch of concrete behind it.

in front of the existing UNLESS you have the approval of a fireplace mason who's experienced in this technique,,, the depth:height ratio's very critical in the successful operation of fireplaces,,, too shallow & there'll be insufficient draft/smoke removal,,, too deep & the wall won't reflect enough heat into the room.
