hi people, first post on here so please be gentle!
I'm currently removing an old fire back and opening up a fireplace for the installation of a wood stove. When inside the fireplace (getting covered in dust) I noticed a soldier course of brick which appears to be the original lintel. Below this is a concrete lintel that has a small crack running through it. My question is, do you think the small crack is just from heat, or another problem and is it likely that most of the support is being provided by the soldier course. (Hod do I heck the condition of the soldier course to see if the other lintel was put in as a precautionary measure?)
The fireplace is 110cm wide, behind the current opening of 40cm width. I haven't removed the bricks to reveal the original opening yet. any guidacne much appreciated.
