I am putting in a new ceiling fan as the old one wasn't working. coming out of the ceiling I have a white, red, black, and copper (ground)... the old ceiling fan had a white and a black. for the new fan, I am installing a hampton bay remote control which has a black in and a white in...(and a black, blue and white out which correspond well with the black blue and white of the new fan)....
i have tried from the ceiling to the remote delice ...black from the ceiling to the black device in (and white from the ceiling and white in)...and red from the ceiling to black in on the remote device..(and of course white from the ceiling to white into the device.)....neither has worked when I've turned the power back on at the wall....do I hook the red from the ceiling and the black from the ceiling together with the black into the remote device ..(and of course white from the ceiling to white into the device.)....?
please let me know thanks

One possibility is that there is nothing wrong with the old fan and that there is a problem with the wiring. You should have tested the wiring before installing a new fan.
You hook one or the other (red or black) to the remote, depending on what you want and what is available. One or both may be switched or one may be hot all the time.
I sure hope that you are actually turning power off at the circuit breaker and not at the wall switch. using the wall switch may not always kill power to a ceiling box, and you could easily kill yourself. Always use the circuit breaker to kill power. Never rely on the switch alone.
Use an analog meter or two wire tester and check for power at the wires in the ceiling. Figure out which wire is switched or if they both are, and which way is on for the switch(es).

thanks ...oh yes...have been turning power off at the breaker...I am not that much of a thrill seeker
prior to taking the fan down I had used two wire tester on the switches...which were fine..i think it was the fan as my daughter admitted to putting in bulbs that were higher than the max allowed.
upon further testing I have discovered that the red wire is controled by one wall switch...and the black wire is controled by a separate wall switch right next to the one that controls the red one...
i plan on trying the red wire to the black wire on remote control device that will control everything (and white to white and gournd to ground) .....
and the black one from the ceiling to the light past the remote control device....the key is whether the wiring will work with the black wire from the ceiling and the blue out of the remote tied to the blue to the light kit of the ceiling fan ...do you have advice on that ....that way the light can be controled from both wall swiches and from the remote button...what do you think?
thanks

Do not attempt to connect both through and around the remote. You will almost certainly damage the remote receiver.
