Sch. 40 black iron pipe is ok, but I would use ASTM D2513 plastic gas line, yellow. It's easier to work with. What is your source? Do you have to go underground?

Black iron is the way to go for inside gas lines.

I've never heard of plastic gas line used inside of homes. Around me it's not allowed. It's too easy to puncture. The plastic line is great for underground work. Aside from that, you need expensive fittings and special tools to join them.

Iron pipe is (relatively) cheap, tamper resistant, little chance of crushing and puncturing. My only advise is use a quality thread sealer (pipe dope), approved for LP or Nat gas for the connections. Stay away from teflon tape.

The one other option you have is CSST. It's stainless steel tubing. However, you need an "certification" card to purchase it and it's more expensive than black iron.
