I still do plenty of DIY on my present homes even at the age of 62. I enjoy those small fixit projects and sometimes get myself in larger ones. I have lived here for 22 years and have fixed more things then I can count.
Here is why I am posting this.
If you are a DIY person and your planning a new home maybe you should plan some maintenance access into your house plan.
Things like access panels to plumbing walls and maybe wider plumbing walls. If it has water in it it will leak someday.
Electric panels with access panels to the top and bottom of the panel for possilbe additional circuits in future.
If you have a computer/entertainment area use conduit to feed those things so that as time change and old wires or circuits are obsolete you can pull them out and install the new stuff without crawling thru the attic.
We live in a fast changing world and without some future plans with your new home, maintenance and changes can be a nightmare.
I realize that you can't have doors and removable panels all over your house without ruining the looks but if you can add just a couple they can save you so much time and money it will make them well worth your original cost.
I now have access panels in back of both closets that are plumbing walls. Sure would have been nice if they had been there originally.
