We are looking for information on removing a faux-stone surround that appears to be one piece made to resemble big rocks with grout around them. We don't know how thick it is, how it was installed, or what to expect to find behind it. Our ranch-style house was built in a development in 1979.

Does anyone have experience with how to safely remove the faux-stone unit without harming the firebox and the other parts of the chimney?
